Good Morning Loganville and Grayson! We’re back with you bright and early this morning to share more local news and happenings. The New Year is quickly approaching! Here’s a peak at our community…
- Gwinnett’s only historic Black high school will become a themed library to honor stories.
- All For Lunch, a non profit founded in Gwinnett County, gives back by paying off lunch debts at all 81 Gwinnett County Public Elementary Schools.
- Comedian, Andrew Stanley, is coming to Loganville Christian Academy in January, so get your tickets now!
But first, today’s weather:
We should experience some relief from the frigid temperatures of late. The sun should be out all day and bring us to a high of 55, and with a mild low of 36, we will finally get a chance to warm up.

Here are the top stories today in Loganville-Grayson:
- The non profit, All For Lunch, met with Gwinnett County School Nutrition Department in mid-December to pay off the remaining balance for all 81 of Gwinnett County’s elementary schools. The non profit, founded in Gwinnett County, issued a check for over $75,000 to pay off all remaining lunch debt as we move into the New Year. (All For Lunch)
- The Hooper-Renwick Legacy Preservation Committee was joined by Gwinnett County and Lawrenceville city officials to take the necessary steps to protect the county’s only Black high school. The Hooper-Renwick high school, where all of Gwinnett County’s Black students were educated until integration during the 1967-68 academic year, was at risk of being torn down for a development until the school’s Black students stepped in to help preserve its history. With the help of the preservation committee, the school will be transformed to host a themed library that will honor the stories and experiences of the Black students and faculty who attended the school. With monetary help from the 2017 SPLOST project and the city of Lawrenceville, the Hooper-Renwick themed library will become a community space to not only read these stories but see and touch artifacts from the past. - Plumbers are inundated with call after call of homeowners needing help repairing their burst pipes. The freezing temperatures have caused disruption throughout the metro-Atlanta area, including Walton and Gwinnett counties. Local plumbing technician, Rashad Patterson, cut his Christmas holiday short as the calls started coming in quickly. He received over 20 calls in two days, and as he was completing his 8th call of the day when interviewed, he said “I’m trying to be attentive to everyone.” His company, Plumbing to a Tee LLC encourages homeowners to be proactive by insulating pipes, being familiar with locations of the shut off valves, and turning off the water if you plan to be gone for an extended period of time. From my notebook:
- Gwinnett County Public Schools reminds families of the Inclement Weather policy as we move into the Winter season. School is most likely to be cancelled or delayed in the morning before school starts rather than dismissed early due to approaching weather systems. The decision to cancel school is usually made by 6am the morning of the cancellation and will be announced via social media channels, GCPS TV, the website, SchoolMessenger calls and texts, and local radio and TV stations. - Comedian Andrew Stanley will be the featured performer at Loganville Christian Academy’s Family Comedy Night. Tickets are now on sale, so be sure to purchase them now for the Jan. 24th show, which will be opened by amateur LCA student comedians. Andrew quit his Budget Analyst job to become a stand-up comedian, and his dry sense of humor pairs well with unique perspective. He is touring nationally and internationally, so don’t miss the opportunity to have some laughs. (Instagram)
- Congratulations to Covington native, Drew Parker, for his recent Grammy nomination for Best Country Song. Parker wrote the song, “Doin’ This,” with Luke Combs and Robert Williford, and it was recorded by Combs. Being from a neighboring town, Parker began playing in small local venues in our area before graduating to larger venues. Not only does he write music for other artists, but he is working on releasing his own music. He’ll be kicking off his first headlining tour at the Georgia Theatre in Athens in January.
