Want to have your voice heard?

When it comes to speaking up about local issues, no one would call Sonoma a shrinking violet. No, we are a bright, bold bouquet of different views and forms of expression. And that is a good thing. Civic engagement is a core sign of a connected community where everyone shows up in some way, whether as a Fourth of July volunteer or a city council watchdog.

Our society is bettered by the participation of more voices, new ideas and those who aren’t afraid to question. And if you are one such person, and have been meaning to get more involved, there’s a golden opportunity hanging over Sonoma Valley at the moment.

Both the county and the city are seeking applicants for a number of committees, commissions and councils — all volunteer roles that influence local affairs. Sometimes that input is hyper specific, like Sonoma’s Design Review & Historic Preservation Commission with its mission to protect the “architectural heritage” of Sonoma. Others are more broad, like the MACs (a.k.a. Municipal Advisory Council). One covers the Springs, one covers “North Sonoma Valley,” but both have influence on the county’s many projects and policies.

In recent months, the North Valley MAC has discussed SDC, while the Springs MAC reviewed the projects of developer Ken Mattson. If you’re interested in having a voice in projects and proposals big and small, you have a few more days to apply.

The city has a deadline of Friday, Dec. 16, at 5 p.m. Head to Sonomacity.org to read about all of the open positions, of which there are many. Each has its own application process, so read the instructions carefully and make sure you’re available on the time and day the group meets. The applications can be found on the city’s website, or give the city clerk a call at 707-938-3681.

For county-appointed positions, the deadline is Friday, Dec. 23. Find all the openings and applications at sonomacounty.ca.gov. Members of the Sonoma City Council will decide on the appointments for the city, with First District Supervisor Susan Gorin making the call for county roles.

While we’re talking commissions, we applaud the Sonoma City Council for opening its commissions and committees to more people, specifically youth, those who aren’t citizens and those who aren’t registered to vote.

It is important we have representation from all walks of life on these local bodies, especially those with experiences that differ from the voices we have now. Consider stepping up, or encouraging a friend to apply.

It’s time to be heard.
