Athleta Rewards Mastercard® 2023 Review – Forbes Advisor

Earning Rewards

The Athleta Rewards Mastercard®* earns 5 points per dollar spent across the Gap Inc. family of brands and 1 point per dollar spent on purchases everywhere else. Points are earned at any store in the Gap, Inc. brand family and the more brands you shop with, the more bonus points you earn:

  • Shop with 2 brands each year, earn an additional 500 points.
  • Shop with 3 brands each year, earn an additional 1,000 points.
  • Shop with 4 brands each year, earn an additional 2,000 points.

Quarterly points are also awarded each quarter a purchase is made in a Gap, Inc. family of brands store.

Points earned with the Athleta Rewards Mastercard®* are not awarded for 14 days after the purchase and all rewards expire after 12 months of consecutive inactivity.

The Athleta Rewards Mastercard®* includes a welcome bonus: 20% off the first purchase at the Gap Inc. family of brands.

Redeeming Rewards

One hundred points may be redeemed for $1 in reward, but only toward purchases made with a brand in the Gap, Inc. family of brands. The issuer advertises no merchandise restrictions, but the fine print lists a number of restrictions: rewards may not be used toward the purchase of subscriptions, gift cards or used to pay taxes or fees including packaging, shipping or gift wrap charges. A $500 reward redemption maximum exists per transaction. Rewards may not be used to pay down a balance on a credit card account.

Rewards Potential

To determine the rewards potential of the Athleta Rewards Mastercard®*, we consider what an American household might spend on a credit card each year. Forbes Advisor uses data from various government agencies in order to determine both baseline income and spending averages across various categories. Our estimated 70th percentile household brings in $107,908 annually and we base spending on that number.

Forbes Advisor estimates that the household has $32,072 in expenses that can be reasonably charged to a credit card. Of this, we estimate about $1,800 will be spent on apparel or clothing. If a cardholder spends this full amount at Athleta or other stores in the Gap Inc. family of brands each year, the account would receive 9,000 points, equal to $90 in rewards. If this $1,800 was done across four or more Gap, Inc. brands and qualified for the extra 2,000 points, the total rewards earned would be worth $110.
