A Piedmont Triad business is stepping up to help the Surry County School District, as well as Mount Airy City Schools, in a big way.Surry Chemicals, Inc. employees raised money to help pay off school lunch debt, and is hoping other local businesses will follow in its footsteps to also help.”It changes everyday,” said Surry County Schools Nutrition Director Sherri Parks. “But as of today, we have about $13,000 in outstanding debt for meals that have been charged.” The Surry County School District has racked up the school lunch debt since the beginning of the school year.During the peak of the COVID-19 Pandemic, schools received funding from the USDA to allow for free meals. That ended this year, though, leaving families with extra costs to cover. “I think our families were used to having those meals for free,” said Parks. “So as we’ve come into this school year, a lot of folks have charged their meals because we’ve gone back to our original system of free, reduced, and full pay– and that’s how we landed with these charges at this time.”But now that debt is a bit smaller. “A lot of these employees went to Surry County Schools or Mt. Airy City Schools,” said Surry Chemicals, Inc. Sales and Marketing Director Paul Stroup. “We have kids that go to these schools.”Surry Chemicals, Inc. is a local, family-owned and operated business. Workers there decided they wanted to help foot the bill for some of those costs. “I was pleasantly surprised with the amount of money we came up with to write a check to city and county schools to help with this debt,” said Stroup.The company was able to submit checks to both Surry County Schools and Mount Airy City Schools.”We were surprised for a lot of kids, that this could be the only meal they get that day,” said Stroup. “And that will touch your heart for sure. So when we heard about this cause, we wanted to participate and contribute, and we hope we can help get this debt completely erased.”The Surry County School District says it’s thankful to live in an area where businesses like Surry Chemicals, Inc. are so willing to step in to help in times of need.”They’re just so giving and have big hearts,” said Parks. “And the fact they put us first this Christmas season, it shows where we are and the folks in our community that want to help– and we are so thankful.””It’s rewarding,” added Stroup. “And I was pleasantly surprised with the generosity of our employees.”Surry Chemicals, Inc. preferred not to disclose its donation amount, but workers are hoping this will encourage other businesses to donate as well.
