LINCOLN — New data has been released on the number of applicants who applied for student debt relief, and nearly two-thirds of Nebraska’s applicants were approved prior to the federal program being put on pause.
On Friday, the White House disclosed the number of people in each state who applied for student debt relief or were automatically eligible for relief. The program was indefinitely paused before loan servicers could discharge any debt.
In August, President Joe Biden announced his Administration’s plan for eligible parties to receive $20,000 in debt relief for borrowers earning less than $125,000 per year.
Over the course of just under four weeks, over 26 million people either applied for debt relief or provided information to the Department of Education to be deemed eligible for relief. Over 16 million applicants had been approved.
Nebraska had a total of 154,000 applicants, including 97,000 who were approved.
Including all 50 states, as well as the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, Nebraska ranked 37th for both total applicants and approvals.
The Department of Education was required to stop accepting applications as a result of lawsuits brought by opponents of the program, with multiple states — including Nebraska — filing lawsuits seeking a stop to the program.
