
Juggling a job with a university degree usually involves waiting tables or pulling pints in the hours after course work. For Jonas Nkala, a third-year undergraduate at the University of Bristol, it involves catching up on work on his laptop at the bus depot and arriving at lectures still dressed in his Stagecoach uniform.
Nkala, 22, is working as a full-time bus driver alongside studying for a business and law degree. He is part of a growing number of undergraduate students who are earning five-figure salaries while helping bus companies to plug a national shortage of drivers. Almost one in ten bus driver positions is vacant.
