LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — A new proposal would help protect victims of assault and abuse from further pain, during their darkest hours.
Legislative Bill 315 is scheduled for a hearing Wednesday afternoon, when the Judiciary Committee meets.
It would prohibit service providers from taking action against victims over certain debts.
The legislation was introduced by Senator John Fredrickson from District 20 in Omaha.
His measure is aimed at shielding survivors of sexual assault, domestic assault and child abuse, who are struggling to pay off bills related to their injuries.
That includes both examination and treatment of their wounds.
Providers would not be able to refer bills for such services to a collection agency.
They’d also be prohibited from sharing information about their payment status in any way that impacts the victim, their family or their guardian’s credit rating.
Wednesday’s hearing will be held in room 1113 beginning at 1:30 p.m.
The public is able to attend and testify in-person.
