RALEIGH, N.C. — Authorities in Wake County put out a fire in Raleigh that started from smoking materials at an apartment complex near the American Red Cross
According to Raleigh Fire Department Division Chief Robert Hodge, crews responded to a call at 202 North Peartree Lane shortly after 7 p.m. Tuesday and marked it under control at 7:40 p.m.
This is the second fire in just as many days in Wake County as officials responded to a fire in Garner Monday night, which left one fire fighter injured.
The fire was started due to the improper disposal of smoking materials.
A man was asleep in the second-floor unit when the fire started. The man saw the flames, ran out the door and left the door open.
According to Chief Hodge, that’s “one of the worst things you can do,” because it provides a fire easy access to oxygen.
The fire spread to all four units of the complex. No injuries were reported from either residents or firefighters. An estimated 35 firefighters were on the scene.
Chief Hodge told WRAL News 14 people were displaced by the fire. The displaced people were taken to the American Red Cross building as a temporary shelter.
