Fort Collins church helps retire $1.2 million in medical debt for Colorado families

First Presbyterian Church of Fort Collins spent $5,000 to help clear more than $1.2 million in medical debt for more than1,200 Colorado families.

The church worked with RIP Medical Debt, a national charity that has developed the capacity to retire medical debt at pennies on the dollar, according to a news release.

Through its Mission and Outreach Center, the church made a $5,000 donation to RIP Medical Debt. RIP handles the transaction, including sending letters to each family noting that their medical debt no longer exists.

“Our church is committed to putting our faith into action, spreading God’s compassion and justice in the world,” Senior Pastor Corey Nelson said in the release. “The partnership with RIP provided an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of our neighbors. One of our priorities is working to eradicate poverty, and this is a meaningful step. We hope it brings the joy of Christmas to families that were overwhelmed by medical debt.”

Approximately half of the retired debt was held by families in Larimer, Weld and Boulder counties, with the remainder spread across counties throughout Colorado. The average debt erased was $982.

First Presbyterian Church of Fort Collins is located at 531 S. College Ave. To find out more, visit firstpresfc.org.
