Four local educators honored with Zaffirini debt relief grant

Four Laredo educators were honored with a $2,500 grant to help pay their college student loan debts.

Teachers and professors from Texas A&M International University, Laredo Community College, United ISD and Laredo ISD were among the recipients.

The educators were honored with scholarships through the Senator Judith Zaffirini Teachers’ College Student Loan Debt Grant Program. Her son, Carlos Zaffirini Jr., created the program in honor of his mother and in advance of her Feb. 13 birthday.

“Carlos founded this great annual program for my birthday in 2017 to reflect our shared appreciation for teachers,” Zaffirini said.

To qualify for this grant, educators must have taught in Laredo for at least five years, have a college student loan debt of at least $5,000 and be selected by his or her institution, based on the program’s criteria.

The grant recipients this year are Francisco Maldonado, Laredo ISD; Veronica Contreras, United ISD; Marissa Guerrero, Laredo College; and Martha Salinas, Texas A&M-International University.
