US public health services, research, and food security will benefit from government spending boost in 2023

Public health, pandemic preparedness, infectious disease control, research to drive biomedical and health breakthroughs, veterans’ medical care, mental health services, and food insecurity will be among the beneficiaries of $1.7tn in US government spending in 2023.

The US Congress passed the 2023 Omnibus Appropriations Bill on 23 December, which President Joe Biden said he would sign. The bill includes almost $800bn in non-defence funding until 30 September 2023, a $68bn or 9.3% increase over 2022.

The National Institutes of Health will receive $47.5bn, a 5.6% increase, said a summary of the 4155 page bill released by Senator Patrick Leahy, chairman of the Committee on Appropriations.1 The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will receive $9.2bn, an increase of $760m.
