Greg Abbott in 2015<\/a> to allow doctors to prescribe THC (the active ingredient in marijuana) products to patients with epilepsy.\u00a0Since then, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kxan.com\/news\/texas\/texas-law-expanding-medical-marijuana-takes-effect-sept-1\/\" target=\"_blank\">the original bill has expanded<\/a> to allow patients with other medical conditions \u2013 such as post-traumatic stress disorder and cancer \u2014 \u00a0into the medical marijuana program.<\/p>\n<div class=\"nlp-ignore-block article-content rich-text\">\n<aside class=\"promo-link\">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kxan.com\/news\/texas\/texas-law-expanding-medical-marijuana-takes-effect-sept-1\/?ipid=promo-link-block1\" class=\"promo-link__link\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n\t\tPREVIOUS COVERAGE: Texas law expanding medical marijuana takes effect Sept. 1\t<\/a><br \/>\n<\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cFor the last 18 months, we have seen a significant increase in the growth of patients within the program, approximately averaging about a 10% month-over-month growth,\u201d Chief Wayne Mueller of the Texas Department of Public Safety said.<\/p>\n<p>In the next 18 to 24 months, there will likely be 100,000 patients in Texas using medical marijuana, Mueller said.<\/p>\n<p>But as the number of patients rises, there are still only three licensed cannabis providers in the state, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/austin\/news\/2021\/10\/28\/33-increase-texas-medical-cannabis-patients.html#:~:text=There%20are%20currently%20just%20three,Knox%20Medical%20known%20as%20Fluent.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reporting by Austin Business Journal<\/a>. In comparison, while Florida has significantly more patients enrolled in its medical marijuana program (they have over 700,000 patients), it has 22 different dispensing organizations, Mueller said.<\/p>\n<p>To address the rising number of patients, the Public Safety Commission agreed to hire a consultant who could help them grow as a program and procure more licensees that can distribute medical marijuana to patients.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cWhile we are in this fledgling stage with this program, I think bringing in a person or an entity that has experience with other state programs that were at the same point (at some) time will give us some vital insights so that we\u2019re not trying to reinvent any wheels,\u201d Mueller said.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the commissioners also passed a working group that can help facilitate any changes the Texas legislature may request the program make in the next session.
