Reduce your monthly bills<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Chances are, big savings can be found by reassessing your day-to-day expenses, according to certified financial planner Ted Jenkin, CEO at Atlanta-based Oxygen Financial and a member of the CNBC FA Council.<\/p>\n<p>Jenkin, who co-wrote a book called &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/21-Day-Budget-Cleanse-Leaner-Fatter\/dp\/1677293276\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The 21-Day Budget Cleanse<\/a>,&#8221; recommends people take a detox-type approach to their household budgets.<\/p>\n<p>Look at the 21 largest bills you have \u2014 if you have that many \u2014 and try to shop around or change them.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-106998462\">\n<div role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" id=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-106998462\" class=\"PlaceHolder-wrapper\" data-vilynx-id=\"7000227443\" data-test=\"VideoPlaceHolder\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-videoEmbed\" id=\"InlineVideo-0\" data-test=\"InlineVideo\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-inlineThumbnailContainer\"><img class=\"InlineVideo-videoThumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/image.cnbcfm.com\/api\/v1\/image\/106998463-16415818871641581882-20743354761-1080pnbcnews.jpg?v=1641581886&amp;w=750&amp;h=422&amp;vtcrop=y\" alt=\"How to build emergency savings\"\/><span class=\"InlineVideo-videoButton\"\/><span\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Take your bundled internet, phone and cable bill, for example. Ask your provider if there is an opportunity for a better package or rate. Also investigate the other options available through other companies.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Most people really haven&#8217;t taken the time to see where they&#8217;re overspending and size up what the difference is,&#8221; Jenkin said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline1\"\/>2. Reassess your credit card habits<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Prices were higher this holiday season, which prompted consumers who turned to credit cards to take on bigger amounts of debt, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/12\/28\/why-carrying-holiday-debt-can-be-especially-troubling-this-year.html\">LendingTree survey<\/a> recently found.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s &#8220;troubling&#8221; now, as interest rates on those debts are poised to continue to climb, according to Matt Schulz, chief credit analyst at LendingTree.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>By simply asking for a lower interest rate, you may be able to pare back how much it takes to pay down those debts, LendingTree <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/12\/28\/why-carrying-holiday-debt-can-be-especially-troubling-this-year.html\">has found<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It may also help to seek better rates elsewhere \u2013 either through a 0% interest balance transfer credit card or a personal loan.<\/p>\n<p>Also take stock of any rewards you&#8217;ve accumulated to see how you can turn them into extra funds, Jenkin said.<\/p>\n<p>Many people have unused perks that they have not tapped into, such as points to help whittle down your credit card bill.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s found money,&#8221; Jenkin said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-107164721\">\n<div role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" id=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-107164721\" class=\"PlaceHolder-wrapper\" data-vilynx-id=\"7000277018\" data-test=\"VideoPlaceHolder\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-videoEmbed\" id=\"InlineVideo-0\" data-test=\"InlineVideo\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-inlineThumbnailContainer\"><img class=\"InlineVideo-videoThumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/image.cnbcfm.com\/api\/v1\/image\/107164733-2ED5-REQ-121222-Today.jpg?v=1670864542&amp;w=750&amp;h=422&amp;vtcrop=y\" alt=\"Sharon Epperson's money moves to make heading into 2023\"\/><span class=\"InlineVideo-videoButton\"\/><span\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline2\"\/>3. Look for higher rates on your cash<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>As interest rates climb, that&#8217;s good news for the money you stand to earn on your cash.<\/p>\n<p>Online savings accounts and certificates of deposit, or CDs, are providing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/09\/26\/where-to-get-the-best-return-on-your-cash-amid-rising-interest-rates.html\">highest interest rates<\/a> in more than a decade.<\/p>\n<p>If your emergency fund has less than the three to six months&#8217; expenses typically recommended by experts, having quick access to your cash should be your first priority, according to Greg McBride, chief financial analyst at Bankrate.com.<\/p>\n<p>In that case, online savings accounts may work best. Even socking away a small amount of cash per week can add up over time, McBride said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline3\"\/>4. Sell what you aren&#8217;t using<\/h2>\n<div class=\"InlineImage-imageEmbed\" id=\"ArticleBody-InlineImage-107172681\" data-test=\"InlineImage\">\n<div class=\"InlineImage-wrapper\">\n<div>\n<p>Burke\/triolo Productions | The Image Bank | Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>If you haven&#8217;t used something in a year \u2014 aside from family heirlooms or holiday decorations \u2014 it&#8217;s time to sell it, Jenkin said.<\/p>\n<p>If you haven&#8217;t worn a shirt in a year, for example, you can unload it on a website such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/poshmark.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Poshmark<\/a>. Electronics you&#8217;re not using can be sold on sites such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.decluttr.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Decluttr<\/a>\u00a0or Facebook, Jenkin said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s many, many apps and websites to basically sell your stuff,&#8221; Jenkin said.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re not ready to part with an item forever \u2014 such as an extra car, for example \u2014 you may want to consider renting it out instead on a website like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/turo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Turo<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline4\"\/>5.
