(WANE) \u2014 In 2010, Fort Wayne Community Schools faced an annual increase of $1 million in health care costs, which Chief Financial Officer Kathy Friend called \u201cunsustainable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can\u2019t give people raises and be paying increases like that in health care,\u201d said Charles Cammack, the district\u2019s Chief Operations Officer.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, Cammack spearheaded a three-point plan that seems to be saving millions and, perhaps, keeping the more than 4,000 employees a bit healthier.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you are working on employee wellness,\u201d he began, \u201cworking on insurance plan design and monitoring the data, you are ahead of the game. With annual doctor visits, lab work and better exercise and nutrition, employees can manage or eliminate some chronic conditions or ward off future ones, which keeps them away from costlier treatments or visits to the emergency room.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cPeople say \u2018well, I just got it\u2019 but no, you don\u2019t have to keep it,\u201d Cammack said. \u201cIf you do these wellness things, you can get better.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Plan design<\/h3>\n<p>Since FWCS self-insures, Cammack had the flexibility to adjust what the plan would pay for. They\u2019re busy,\u201d he explained. \u201cIt\u2019s not a slam on doctors, but nurses build a rapport and then they get you to do things that you might not do because you have that relationship. But the insurance policies don\u2019t typically pay for that.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Cammack also adjusted the plan (a \u201cno-brainer\u201d) to lower the costs of asthma medicines, which significantly dropped the number of asthma-related visits to the ER.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re saving money, and we\u2019re insuring that your health is stable. This is not hard.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Monitoring the data<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cWhat typically happens is [employers] get a plan and that\u2019s it,\u201d he explained. \u201cThey don\u2019t monitor it, they don\u2019t pay attention to how many people are on the plan and they don\u2019t pay attention to any trends.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Two or three years ago, Cammack and his team noticed a price spike in \u201cspecialty drugs.\u201d As a result, the district dropped its pharmacy partner and found someone to negotiate more directly with drug makers.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cAnd that has saved us probably this year a million dollars,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Cammack said the current trend is a need for more mental health services and providers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo we need to talk to health care providers in the mental health arena and say, \u2018what should we be doing and projecting out? How do we provide that service in locations that are accessible, but also how do we get rid of the stigma around getting that kind of help?&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cammack said while school nurses care for students, they can become a trusted source for staff, too. The district provided two clinics with a doctor who can serve as a primary care physician, but some employees are suspicious. <\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cWe assure them that we don\u2019t look at individual medical records,\u201d Cammack said. \u201cWe don\u2019t know what people are receiving what care.
