It will allow every borrower with an income of $125,000 or less ($250,000 for married couples) to have up to $10,000 in <a href=\"https:\/\/missouriindependent.com\/2022\/08\/24\/biden-to-wipe-out-10000-in-student-loan-debt-for-many-borrowers\/\">debt forgiven<\/a>, or $20,000 forgiven for those with Pell Grants. Those income levels have to have been during 2020 or 2021.<\/p>\n<p>No documents need to be uploaded with the application, Biden said.<\/p>\n<p>Late Friday, <a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/debt-relief\/application\">a beta version<\/a> of the student loan forgiveness application was released by the Department of Education. Biden said 8 million borrowers were able to fill out the application \u201cwithout a glitch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The White House <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2022\/08\/24\/fact-sheet-president-biden-announces-student-loan-relief-for-borrowers-who-need-it-most\/\">estimated<\/a> that 43 million borrowers would qualify for some relief.<\/p>\n<p>Those who qualify have until December 31, 2023, to fill out the application.<\/p>\n<p><strong>GOP lawsuit<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The president called out Republicans for attacking the debt relief program, as well as Republican-led states that filed a lawsuit to prevent borrowers from applying for financial relief. <a href=\"https:\/\/missouriindependent.com\/briefs\/ag-joins-five-others-in-suing-the-biden-administration-to-stop-student-debt-cancellation\/\">The suit argues<\/a> Congress did not approve the debt cancellation and the Department of Education is misusing its emergency authority.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTheir outrage is wrong and hypocritical,\u201d Biden said. \u201cI don\u2019t want to hear from Republican officials who had hundreds of thousands of dollars, even millions of dollars, in pandemic relief loans \u2014 PPP loans \u2014 who now attack working class Americans for getting relief.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona also joined the president for the announcement. Cardona said the department is working to also include borrowers with private loans to qualify for debt relief.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are working on pathways there to support those,\u201d Cardona said. \u201cBut we\u2019re moving as quickly as possible to provide relief to as many people as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The administration quietly dropped a section of borrowers \u2014 nearly 800,000 \u2014 from qualifying for the student loan forgiveness plan if they have loans administered through the now-defunct <a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/help-center\/answers\/article\/what-types-of-loans-fall-under-ffel-program\">Federal Family Education Loan program<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/understand-aid\/types\/loans\/perkins\">Perkins loans<\/a>, following a lawsuit from half-a-dozen Republican-led states.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsfromthestates.com\/article\/missouri-judge-hears-lawsuit-challenging-biden-student-debt-relief-plan\">A Missouri judge<\/a> will issue a decision on the lawsuit filed by attorneys general from Missouri, Nebraska, Arkansas, Kansas and South Carolina and on behalf of Iowa\u2019s governor.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/education\/new-lawsuit-from-small-business-group-seeks-to-block-biden-student-debt-relief-plan\">Another lawsuit<\/a>, filed in Texas, seeks to block the program, arguing that the Biden administration did not ask for public comment before moving forward with its action<\/p>\n<p>\u200b\u200b<a href=\"https:\/\/educationdata.org\/how-many-people-have-student-loans\">More than 43 million <\/a>Americans have student loan debt, and the Federal Reserve <a href=\"https:\/\/fred.stlouisfed.org\/series\/SLOAS\">estimates<\/a> that the total U.S. student loan debt is more than $1.75 trillion.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Watch out for scams<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Biden also warned of a scam in which callers will pretend to be from the federal government, asking about assisting a borrower with student loan debt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet\u2019s be clear,\u201d Biden said. \u201cHang up. You never have to pay for any federal help from the student loan program.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said student loan repayment, which has been paused since early 2020, will resume in January.<\/p>\n<p>Those borrowers who continued to pay off their loans during the student loan freeze in the early stages of the pandemic <a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/announcements-events\/covid-19\/payment-pause-zero-interest\">are allowed to get reimbursed<\/a> for payments made beginning of March 13, 2020, by<a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/manage-loans\/repayment\/servicers\"> contacting their loan servicers<\/a> to request a refund.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/news.google.com\/__i\/rss\/rd\/articles\/CBMic2h0dHBzOi8vd3d3Lm1hcnlsYW5kbWF0dGVycy5vcmcvMjAyMi8xMC8xNy90aGUtc3R1ZGVudC1kZWJ0LXJlbGllZi1hcHBsaWNhdGlvbi1pcy1saXZlLWhlcmVzLXdoYXQteW91LW5lZWQtdG8ta25vdy_SAQA?oc=5\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Getty Images photo by Catherine Lane.
