If your state operates its own exchange, you may have more time.<\/p>\n<p>Most marketplace enrollees \u2014 13 million of 14.5 million in 2022 \u2014\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/health-reform\/state-indicator\/marketplace-plan-selections-by-financial-assistance-status-2\/?currentTimeframe=0&amp;amp;amp;sortModel=%7B%22colId%22:%22Location%22,%22sort%22:%22asc%22%7D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">qualify for federal subsidies<\/a>\u00a0(technically tax credits) to help pay premiums. Four out of 5 customers can find 2023 plans for $10 or less per month after accounting for those tax credits, according to the Centers for Medicare &amp; Medicaid Services.<\/p>\n<p>After the sign-up window closes, you&#8217;d generally need to experience a qualifying life event \u2014 i.e., birth of a child or marriage \u2014 to be given a special enrollment period.<\/p>\n<p>For the most part, people who get insurance through the federal (or their state&#8217;s) exchange are self-employed or don&#8217;t have access to workplace insurance, or they don&#8217;t qualify for Medicare or Medicaid.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-107168598\">\n<div role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" id=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-107168598\" class=\"PlaceHolder-wrapper\" data-vilynx-id=\"7000280055\" data-test=\"VideoPlaceHolder\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-videoEmbed\" id=\"InlineVideo-0\" data-test=\"InlineVideo\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-inlineThumbnailContainer\"><img class=\"InlineVideo-videoThumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/image.cnbcfm.com\/api\/v1\/image\/107168624-1671487140134-gettyimages-1234256037-VN9A4230.jpeg?v=1673182801&amp;w=750&amp;h=422&amp;vtcrop=y\" alt=\"How medical debt became normal in the U.S.\"\/><span class=\"InlineVideo-videoButton\"\/><span\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>The subsidies are still more generous than before the pandemic. Temporarily expanded subsidies that were put in place for 2021 and 2022 were extended through 2025 in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/08\/16\/watch-live-biden-to-sign-inflation-reduction-act-into-law-setting-15percent-minimum-corporate-tax-rate.html\">Inflation Reduction Act<\/a>, which became law in August.<\/p>\n<p>This means there is no income cap to qualify for subsidies, and the amount anyone pays for premiums is limited to 8.5% of their income as calculated by the exchange.
