Ron DeSantis\u2019s long-running war on what he considers to be overly \u201cwoke\u201d curriculum. The Republican governor is widely seen as positioning himself for a possible presidential run in 2024 and has made culture-war issues central to his political identity.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Florida\u2019s<b> <\/b>legislature has enacted laws limiting how teachers can talk about subjects including race. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/nation\/2022\/03\/10\/florida-legislature-passes-anti-woke-bill\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_25&amp;itid=lk_inline_manual_5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A measure signed last spring<\/a>, for instance, seeks to ensure that students are not made to feel guilty for racist acts carried out by others. \u201cA person should not be instructed that he or she must feel guilt, anguish, or other forms of psychological distress for actions, in which he or she played no part,\u201d the law states.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">It was not clear, though, exactly what in the new AP class runs afoul of those limitations.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">The decision was communicated to the College Board, which runs the AP program, in a letter last week that was released to reporters Thursday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">\u201cIn its current form, the College Board\u2019s AP African American Studies course lacks educational value and is contrary to Florida law,\u201d Cassie Palelis, spokeswoman for the Florida Department of Education, said in a statement. \u201cIf the course comes into compliance and incorporates historically accurate content, the Department will reopen the discussion.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">She said that under Florida law, districts need state approval to offer a course to their students.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">The AP African American studies course, an interdisciplinary class that draws from history, literature, political science, art and other subjects, is<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/education\/2022\/12\/02\/ap-african-american-studies-black-history\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_13\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> being piloted <\/a>in about 60 public high schools across the country, the first new course offering from the College Board since 2014. It was unclear whether any Florida schools are included in the pilot program.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p><span class=\"font--article-body font-copy hide-for-print ma-0 pb-md db italic interstitial\"><a data-qa=\"interstitial-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/education\/2022\/12\/02\/ap-african-american-studies-black-history\/?itid=lk_interstitial_manual_14\">Teens embrace AP class featuring Black history, a subject under attack<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Revisions will be made based on early experience, and the course frameworks \u201coften change significantly,\u201d the College Board said. Details of the class will be posted for interested parties to see in spring 2024. It will be available to all interested schools beginning in the 2024-2025 school year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">The College Board<b> <\/b>statement said that the class does not aim to push any point of view and depends on students immersing themselves in primary sources.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">\u201cThe course is designed to encourage students to examine each theme from a variety of perspectives, without ideology, in line with the field\u2019s tradition of debates,\u201d the College Board said. \u201cStudents will encounter evidence, weigh competing viewpoints and come to their own conclusions. AP students are never required to agree with a particular opinion or adopt a particular ideology, but they are expected to analyze different perspectives.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Florida state Sen.
