It is\u00a0teaming up with Point32Health to serve its commercial members in the LGBTQ+ community, the companies <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/includedhealth.com\/announcement\/point32health-and-included-health-deliver-access-to-comprehensive-lgbtq-care\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">announced<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Wednesday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">San Francisco-based <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/includedhealth.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Included Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> gives patients access to virtual and in-person urgent care, primary care, behavioral health and specialty care. It also provides tailored navigation and advocacy services for the LGBTQ+ community and the Black community. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.point32health.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Point32Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, meanwhile, is an organization combining Harvard Pilgrim Health Care and Tufts Health Plan, which caters to people in the Northeast. The organization serves more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.point32health.org\/about-us\/our-family-of-companies\/#:~:text=As%20a%20leading%20not%2Dfor,Maine%2C%20Connecticut%2C%20and%20beyond.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2 million members<\/a>, though it\u2019s not clear how many identify as LGBTQ+.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Point32Health will now be able offer members access to LGBTQ+ Health, Included Health\u2019s navigation and advocacy program for LGBTQ+ members. These members will have access to a care team led by LGBTQ+ care coordinators, who can help them find in-network, gender-affirming providers. They can also be connected to support groups and receive education on medical and legal issues. The services are available through the web and an app.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey will be greeted [by] somebody like them, somebody from the same community who has maybe lived similar life experiences or navigated many of the same healthcare challenges that members reach out to us about,\u201d said Colin Quinn, president of communities at Included Health. \u201cWhether it\u2019s a parent that is looking for care for their child or looking to speak to somebody because their child just came out to them, or maybe it\u2019s a trans member navigating their gender-affirming surgery and needs help understanding benefits and coverage.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Members of Tufts Health Plan began receiving access to LGBTQ+ Health on January 1, while members of Harvard Pilgrim will gain access later in the year. The partnership differs from the one with SCAN Health Plan, which <a href=\"https:\/\/medcitynews.com\/2022\/10\/scan-creates-ma-plan-for-lgbtq-seniors-through-partnership-with-included-health\/\">created<\/a> a separate health plan for LGBTQ+ seniors. With Tufts Health Plan and Harvard Pilgrim, Included Health\u2019s LGBTQ+ Health services will be embedded into commercial members\u2019 current offerings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LGBTQ+ members often struggle to access care: 45% have difficulty finding a primary care physician, 60% struggle finding a mental health provider, 40% report having negative healthcare experiences or discrimination and 35% put off or avoid care because of negative experiences, according to Included Health <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/includedhealth.com\/communities\/lgbtq-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The company is trying to move the needle on these stats, Quinn said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs a result of that discrimination or negative experience, members are saying, \u2018I don\u2019t know who I can trust within the healthcare system. As a result, I\u2019m just going to postpone or avoid my care.\u2019 That\u2019s not a good thing,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quinn, a gay man, has had his own struggles in accessing care. Several years ago, he tried to go on Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), a treatment for preventing HIV.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI was looking for a doctor to prescribe PrEP,\u201d he said. \u201cThe first doctor I went to really didn\u2019t fully understand what PrEP was and actually shamed me for wanting to go on it, instead of supporting me, applauding me for this good decision I was making for my own personal health \u2026 I actually postponed and avoided my own healthcare for a little bit because then I was in my own head.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quinn\u2019s experience led him to founding Included Health in 2019, which was acquired by Grand Rounds and Doctor On Demand in 2021. The combined entity rebranded under the Included Health brand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Health plans have a responsibility to improve healthcare access for the LGBTQ+ community, Quinn argued. Doing so will improve member satisfaction and reduce healthcare costs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere is a significant unmet need,\u201d he stated. \u201cSomething needs to happen there.
