The Biden administration has spent government funds on unnecessary items, says Rep. Robert Aderholt, R-Ala.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou can\u2019t just keep spending and spending and spending,\u201d Aderholt said Saturday during an appearance on Newsmax <\/a>\u00a0\u201cAmerica Right Now.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n \u201cSome members of Congress won\u2019t really focus on cut spending unless they\u2019re really pushed to the wall and we\u2019re\u00a0\u2014 hopefully this is the situation where we\u2019re pushed to the wall\u00a0\u2014 where we\u2019re saying, \u2018Alright, we\u2019re going to change\u2019 instead of being back here a year from now where we\u2019re raising the debt limit again.\u201d<\/p>\n The U.S. this week hit a limit on how much money it can borrow, and the\u00a0Treasury Department<\/a>\u00a0said in a letter to congressional leaders it had started taking \u201cextraordinary measures\u201d as the government had run up against its legal borrowing capacity of $31.381 trillion. An artificially imposed cap, the debt ceiling\u00a0has been increased roughly 80 times since the 1960s.<\/p>\n \u201cI respectfully urge Congress to act promptly to protect the full faith and credit of the United States,\u201d Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen wrote in the letter.<\/p>\n Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., have several months to reach agreement as the\u00a0Treasury Department<\/a>\u00a0imposes measures to keep the government operating until at least June. But years of intensifying partisan hostility have led to a conflicting set of demands that jeopardize the ability of the lawmakers to work together on a basic duty.<\/p>\n Aderholt said lawmakers need to clean up frivolous expenditures and cut spending on growing programs like Social Security and Medicaid.<\/p>\n \u201cWe need to make sure\u00a0\u2014 we have so many people in this country that are fleecing the system. We have so much spending in the U.S. that could be pared back and there\u2019s a way that we can do it. Democrats want to keep spending and it\u2019s just like kicking the can down the road,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
