Tim Kaine (D-Va.) said Sunday that President Biden\u2019s invitation to Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) to discuss the debt ceiling is a \u201cgood thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s a good thing,\u201d Kaine told Margaret Brennan on CBS\u2019s \u201cFace the Nation.\u201d \u201cI\u2019m very, very happy that the president and Speaker McCarthy are talking. That\u2019s really positive.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Biden and McCarthy are expected to meet to talk about the debt ceiling, which needs to be raised in the coming months to avoid a default. The White House wants Congress <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/administration\/3820248-why-the-white-house-is-refusing-to-negotiate-on-the-debt-ceiling\/\">to raise the debt ceiling<\/a> without implementing spending cuts, but Republicans have signaled that they will use the debt ceiling issue to negotiate more spending cuts. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think anyone should flirt with not paying the U.S. credit card, which is what Republicans are doing,\u201d Kaine said. \u201cSo the White House position is correct. Jeff Merkley (D-Or.) sponsored the Protect our CREDIT Act, which if passed, would allow the president to increase the debt limit unless Congress disapproves of it. He said that this bill is the \u201cright solution\u201d to the debt ceiling issue. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a bill called the Protect our CREDIT Act, that would basically say the President has got to cover the debts of the United States,\u201d Kaine said. \u201cAnd if that includes raising the debt ceiling, the president can do that. But if Congress disapproves, then you can have an expedited up or down vote in Congress.
