Bob Stowe, 68, is battling stage 4 lung cancer.\"\/><\/figure>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">BELOIT \u2212 Bob Stowe saved and planned for a retirement full of hunting and fishing trips, enjoying the family farm and sharing with his family.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The 68-year-old Beloit man, a graduate of McKinley High School in Sebring, finally took the chance to set his plans in motion and retired in late August.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Stowe left the oil industry, having inspected wells for 30 plus years. &#8220;He had it all planned,&#8221; his wife, Carolyn, said this week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Five months later, a benefit dinner for Bob Stowe is planned from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday at Almost Home Event Center in Sebring to help defray medical costs.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"gnt_em gnt_em_img gnt_em_img__inset\"><img class=\"gnt_em_img_i\" style=\"height:650px\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/presto\/2023\/01\/25\/NREP\/fcb1ba2f-cf18-42c0-a34a-f18de3a3b2d1-Bob_Stowe.jpg?width=300&amp;height=650&amp;fit=crop&amp;format=pjpg&amp;auto=webp\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/presto\/2023\/01\/25\/NREP\/fcb1ba2f-cf18-42c0-a34a-f18de3a3b2d1-Bob_Stowe.jpg?width=600&amp;height=1300&amp;fit=crop&amp;format=pjpg&amp;auto=webp 2x\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Bob Stowe of Beloit is fighting stage 4 cancer. A benefit dinner to help defray his medical costs will be Jan. 28, 2023 at Almost Home Event Center in Sebring.\"\/><\/figure>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Stowe has Stage 4 lung cancer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">His wife and daughters, Courtney and Katie, shared his story and their family&#8217;s journey to help &#8220;the man in their lives&#8221; battle this disease.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"gnt_ar_b_h2\">Fighting for more time<\/h2>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Shortly after he retired, Stowe developed a cough that worsened. He had trouble breathing and was flown by helicopter to University Hospital in Cleveland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">There, his family said doctors discovered the cancer and started chemotherapy. He was in the hospital for a month before Stowe returned home for outpatient care.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">He has chemotherapy three times a week, every three weeks, at Salem Regional Medical Center. Carolyn Stowe quit her job to care for him.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"gnt_em gnt_em_fb\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" data-gl-method=\"loadFacebook\" data-v-src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/permalink.php?story_fbid=pfbid0EMpu74nzLFJekkSLXtafbM1cR1qFRHfrhB68eQi42QiUR3QGYwpRVjmakGiESmD6l&amp;id=106058231713963\" aria-label=\"Facebook Embedded Post\"><a class=\"gnt_em_fb_ph gnt_em_fb__ps_ph\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/permalink.php?story_fbid=pfbid0EMpu74nzLFJekkSLXtafbM1cR1qFRHfrhB68eQi42QiUR3QGYwpRVjmakGiESmD6l&amp;id=106058231713963\" aria-label=\"Facebook Post on facebook.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><\/aside>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">&#8220;He has not been able to work or enjoy any part of his retirement,&#8221; Courtney Stowe, 31, said. &#8220;It&#8217;s just been very hard.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Her sister, Katie Stowe, 24, said the benefit will help defray chemotherapy and other medical expenses not covered by Medicare.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Tickets cost $10 for adult and $6 for kids. The event, a spaghetti dinner, will include raffle baskets and 50\/50 raffles. At least 250 tickets already have been sold.<\/p>\n<aside aria-label=\"advertisement\" class=\"gnt_m gnt_x gnt_x__lbl gnt_x__al\"\/>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">&#8220;It&#8217;s very humbling to see how many people have reached out and helped,&#8221; Courtney Stowe said.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"gnt_ar_b_h2\">Everyone knows the Stowes<\/h2>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Most people in the Sebring and Beloit areas know the Stowe family. They&#8217;re the kind of folks that are active in the community, and who make friends easily.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">&#8220;Our girls never stood a chance of getting away with anything,&#8221; Carolyn Stowe said with a chuckle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Their father&#8217;s diagnosis has been difficult for the young women.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">&#8220;My dad, in my and my sister&#8217;s eyes, is our hero. He showed us to work hard, to be the best and be good to people. He&#8217;s always been with us racing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">They followed their father&#8217;s footsteps into drag racing, competing in the junior circuit from ages 8 to 18. He also taught them to hunt and fish.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">&#8220;He&#8217;s always been kind of the big supporter, the man in our life, really,&#8221; Courtney Stowe said.<\/p>\n<aside aria-label=\"advertisement\" class=\"gnt_m gnt_x gnt_x__lbl gnt_x__al\"\/>\n<h2 class=\"gnt_ar_b_h2\">&#8216;He&#8217;s been a trooper.&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Carolyn Stowe said her husband has good and bad moments, as does she. The girls do too. All of this was unexpected and has been stressful.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">&#8220;Cancer didn&#8217;t run in his family,&#8221; Carolyn Stowe said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Courtney Stowe added: &#8220;It is hard to watch him and see the decline of his health.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Like others facing a similar situation, they hope and pray for more time. &#8220;He&#8217;s been a trooper,&#8221; Carolyn Stowe said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Bob Stowe was not interviewed for this story.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\"><em>Reach Benjamin Duer at 330-580-8567 or ben.duer@cantonrep.com.
