Ron DeSantis for rejecting a new high school Advanced Placement African-American studies course, the prominent civil rights lawyer said Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>As <em>Common Dreams<\/em> <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/ap-african-american\">reported<\/a> last week, DeSantis rejected the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/23584340-ap-afam-syllabus-watermark\">pilot course in AP African-American studies <\/a>being tested by the College Board\u2014the organization behind the SAT exam \u2014 as he believes it \u201clacks educational value\u201d and violates the state\u2019s <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flsenate.gov\/Session\/Bill\/2022\/7\/BillText\/er\/PDF\">Stop WOKE Act<\/a> by promoting critical race theory (CRT). There is little to no evidence that CRT \u2014 a graduate-level academic discipline examining systemic racism \u2014 is being taught in any K-12 school in Florida, or anywhere in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are here to give notice to Gov. DeSantis that if he does not negotiate with the College Board to allow AP African-American studies to be taught in the classrooms across the state of Florida, that these three young people will be the lead plaintiffs in a historic lawsuit,\u201d Crump said during a Wednesday<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=96EV7vrVDjI\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> press conference<\/a> at the state Capitol in Tallahassee, referring to students Elijah Edwards, Victoria McQueen, and Juliette Heckman.<\/p>\n<p>Victoria McQueen, a junior at Leon High School in Tallahassee, said that \u201cthere are many gaps in American history regarding the African-American population. Ron DeSantis&#8217; decision to block an Advanced Placement course on African American studies <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/wDRhWv433m\">https:\/\/t.co\/wDRhWv433m<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 NowThis (@nowthisnews) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nowthisnews\/status\/1618301179737391104?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 25, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>In Florida, those \u201chorrors\u201d include the centuries-long experiences of slavery and Jim Crow, including 20th-century atrocities like the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/pegasus\/the-truth-laid-bare\/\">Ocoee<\/a> and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.splcenter.org\/news\/2023\/01\/06\/rosewood-centennial-racist-massacre-destroyed-black-florida-town\">Rosewood<\/a> massacres and lynchings like the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/dunnhistory.com\/the-newberry-massacre\/\">Newberry Six <\/a> \u2014 events that shaped the state\u2019s modern history.<\/p>\n<p>Another one of the students, high school sophomore Elijah Edwards, said that \u201cGov. DeSantis decided to deny the potentially life-changing class and effectively censor the freedom of our education and shield us from the truths of our ancestors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought here in this country, we believe in the free exchange of ideas, not the suppression of it,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Also present at the press conference were Florida House Minority Leader Fentrice Driskell (D-63), Florida Legislative Black Caucus Chairwoman Dianne Hart (D-61), state Sen. Shevrin Jones (D-35), American Federation of Teachers secretary-treasurer Fedrick Ingram, and National Black Justice Coalition executive director David Johns.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy rejecting the African-American history pilot program, Ron DeSantis clearly demonstrated he wants to dictate whose story does and doesn\u2019t belong,\u201d said Driskell.<\/p>\n<p>She continued:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>He wants to control what our kids can learn based on politics, not on sound policy. He repeatedly attacks the First Amendment rights of Floridians with books being banned from libraries and classrooms and now throwing his weight against this AP African-American history course. He is undermining the rights of parents and students to make the best decisions for themselves. He wants to say that I don\u2019t belong. He wants to say you don\u2019t belong\u2026 But we are here to tell him, we are America. Governor, Black history is American history and you are on the wrong side of history.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Acknowledging that the course \u201cwill be altered and resubmitted and most likely they\u2019ll be able to make enough changes for the governor to approve it,\u201d Driskell asked, \u201cbut at what cost? Are we really okay with Ron DeSantis deciding what\u2019s acceptable for America\u2019s students across the country about Black history?\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"\/>\n<p>\u201cAccurately teaching our history is not political until others make it so,\u201d Driskell asserted. \u201cHow is political to talk about the struggles we\u2019ve endured? How is political to talk about and to remember our history?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe truth is the truth; you can\u2019t change it, it simply is,\u201d she added. \u201cBut if you try to sugarcoat it, if you refuse to teach it accurately, then the truth can be suppressed, it can be diminished, and if we\u2019re not vigilant, it can even be erased.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis, a potential 2024 presidential candidate, has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2022\/11\/30\/desantis-school-board-covid-00071305\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">backed<\/a> dozens of right-wing school board candidates while purging education officials who promote or enforce Covid-19 mandates. Last year, he outraged LGBTQ+ advocates by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2022\/03\/28\/law-will-not-stand-say-equality-defenders-desantis-signs-dont-say-gay-bill\">signing into law<\/a> the so-called \u201cDon\u2019t Say Gay or Trans\u201d bill, falsely claiming that schools were promoting \u201cpornographic\u201d material while perpetuating homophobic and transphobic tropes.<\/p>\n<p>The governor also signed a law requiring \u201cmedia experts\u201d to ensure that all books in Florida classrooms are \u201cfree of pornography,\u201d are \u201cappropriate for the age level and group,\u201d and contain no \u201cunsolicited theories that may lead to student indoctrination.\u201d Violators face felony charges, leading some teachers to <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/books-removed-from-florida-schools\">cover or remove books<\/a> from their classroom libraries for fear of running afoul of the law.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">My latest. <\/p>\n<p>Black journalists knew from the jump that the end game of the CRT panic was to justify legalizing anti-Black efforts.<\/p>\n<p>Florida and DeSantis are showing us what was under their *ahem* hoods this entire time. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/3dtnSB0lXu\">https:\/\/t.co\/3dtnSB0lXu<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Karen Attiah IS ON INSTAGRAM @karenattiah (@KarenAttiah) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KarenAttiah\/status\/1618294589647118337?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 25, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>DeSantis stridently touts himself as a champion of \u201cfreedom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTogether we have made Florida the freest state in these United States,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/flgov.com\/2022\/01\/11\/governor-ron-desantis-state-of-the-state-address-3\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> during his 2022 State of the State address. \u201cWhile so many around the country have consigned the people\u2019s rights to the graveyard, Florida has stood as freedom\u2019s vanguard.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ar__share border-bottom--gray d-block d-lg-none mb-5 pt-1 pb-3 px-0\" aria-label=\"Share article\">\n<\/aside>\n<aside class=\"disclaimer mt-4 mt-md-6 fst-italic\" aria-label=\"Article disclaimer\">\nThis piece was reprinted by Truthout with permission or license.
