Moments later, he added, \u201cI will veto everything they send me. Not after all the progress we\u2019ve made and how far we\u2019ve come.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">\u201cIn the United States of America, we pay our debts,\u201d he said. Also last week, Treasury Secretary Janet L. Yellen wrote a letter to McCarthy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/2023\/01\/19\/debt-ceiling-default\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">saying<\/a> a default could cause \u201cirreparable harm to the U.S. economy.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Not raising the debt limit, according to economists, could cause the United States to default, sparking a major panic on Wall Street and leading to millions of job losses.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">\u201cLook,\u201d McCarthy said Sunday, \u201cwe\u2019re not going to default.\u201d Before the borrowing limit is reached in June, McCarthy said, \u201cthe responsible thing to do is sit down like two adults and start having that discussion.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">McCarthy did not offer specifics about where he thoughts cuts should be made, other than to reference \u201cwaste\u201d in government, and to say reductions in defense spending should be considered.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">\u201cI want to make sure we\u2019re protected in our defense spending, but make sure it\u2019s effective and efficient,\u201d McCarthy said. He added, \u201cI want to look at every dollar no matter where it\u2019s being spent,\u201d and \u201cYou\u2019re going to tell me inside defense there\u2019s no waste, others?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">It\u2019s the first major showdown in D.C. since Republicans won control of the House in the 2022 midterms. McCarthy was elected speaker by House Republicans this month but only after he agreed to a series of concessions to a bloc of hard-line conservative members in his caucus. That deal included agreements on committee assignments, spending cuts and restoring the motion-to-vacate rule, which allows anyone to call a vote to oust McCarthy as speaker.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Referring to the motion to vacate, McCarthy said, \u201cI don\u2019t have any fear in that.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">McCarthy also defended his decision to place far-right Republicans on a variety of committees, while seeking to remove three Democrats from the Intelligence and Foreign Affairs Committees for what he said were their problematic behaviors.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">\u201cYeah they\u2019re my choices but they\u2019re the conference choices,\u201d McCarthy said when asked about putting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/graphics\/2021\/politics\/congress-electoral-college-count-tracker\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_24\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">election deniers in the Republican caucus<\/a> in charge of House committees. \u201cThese are members who just got elected by their constituents and we put them into committees and I\u2019m proud to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">McCarthy also defended putting Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) on a new committee to investigate the origin of the coronavirus after she compared mask mandates to Jewish persecution during World War II, called for the arrest of Anthony Fauci and spread an array of conspiracy theories that led the previous Congress to remove her from all her committees.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">\u201cYou look at all of it so you have the questions out there,\u201d McCarthy said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">\u201cYou think these are legitimate questions?\u201d host of \u201cFace the Nation\u201d Margaret Brennan asked.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">\u201cI think what the American public want to see is an open dialogue in the process,\u201d McCarthy replied. \u201cThis is a select committee where people can have all the questions they want and you\u2019ll see the outcome.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">The three House Democrats targeted for removal \u2014 Intelligence Committee members Adam B. Schiff (Calif.) and Eric Swalwell (Calif.), and Foreign Affairs committee member Ilhan Omar (Minn.) \u2014 appeared together on CNN.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Referring to far-right members in McCarthy\u2019s conference, Schiff said, \u201cThe only real explanation is, he needs Marjorie Taylor Greene\u2019s vote. He needs Paul A. Gosar\u2019s vote.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Republicans have said Schiff should be removed for saying there was proof former president Donald Trump colluded with Russians, which was not directly stated in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/mueller-report\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_34\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">special counsel Robert S. Mueller III\u2019s report<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">The GOP is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2023\/01\/18\/mccarthys-specious-attacks-adam-schiff-eric-swalwell\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_36\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">targeting Swalwell<\/a> for what they say is his past connection to an alleged Chinese spy, even though federal officials who investigated the matter found no wrongdoing. And Omar is being targeted by Republicans over comments she made that are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2019\/02\/11\/rep-ilhan-omar-apologies-weeks-anti-semitic-tropes\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_36\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">regarded as antisemitic<\/a>. Omar has apologized for the remarks.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">Omar, whose parents immigrated with her from Somalia, accused Republicans of racism in targeting her for removal.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">\u201cI might have used words at the time that I didn\u2019t understand were trafficking in antisemitism,\u201d Omar said, contending that she has learned from that experience. But removing her from committee, she said, \u201cis wrong and it is politically motivated.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">She noted that shortly after she was sworn in, Greene complained about Muslims infiltrating Congress. Omar said McCarthy defended or excused this type of behavior.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\" data-qa=\"article-body\">\n<p data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\" class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\">\u201cThese people are okay with Islamophobia.
