(<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wfla.com\/news\/local-news\/former-tampa-bay-tennis-star-gigi-fernandez-now-a-pro-pickleball-player\/\" target=\"_blank\">WFLA<\/a>) \u2014 Gigi Fern\u00e1ndez was a fixture on the tennis circuit in the 80s and \u201990s. She won two Olympic gold medals and 17 major doubles titles with four different partners.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She was one of the greatest doubles players ever and was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennisfame.com\/hall-of-famers\/inductees\/gigi-fernandez\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">elected to the Tennis Hall of Fame<\/a> in 2010. <\/p>\n<p>These days, you might find her on a pickleball court. Two years ago, a friend asked her to give it a try. At first, she was skeptical.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was like really? I\u2019m not playing pickleball.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fast forward to today, and Fern\u00e1ndez is a ranked pickleball player. She is No. 9 in the world in the senior pro division. She competes in eight or nine tournaments each year.<\/p>\n<div class=\"nlp-ignore-block article-content rich-text\">\n<aside class=\"promo-link\">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsnationnow.com\/us-news\/education\/education-reform\/hold-how-each-state-is-solving-its-teacher-shortage-and-could-you-become-a-teacher\/\" class=\"promo-link__link\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n\t\tState-by-state teacher shortages (and what they\u2019re doing about it)\t<\/a><br \/>\n<\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cTennis is my passion and my life and my business. It\u2019s given me everything I have, but pickleball is my hobby, so I love pickleball,\u201d Fern\u00e1ndez\u00a0said. <\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>The 58-year-old is not surprised by the skyrocketing popularity of pickleball. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a great workout,\u201d she said. \u201cPeople think because the court is small you don\u2019t work out, but actually in a one-hour tennis match, you\u2019re hitting the ball 11 minutes and in a one-hour\u00a0(pickleball) match, you\u2019re hitting the ball 22 minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"nlp-ignore-block article-content rich-text\">\n<aside class=\"promo-link\">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsnationnow.com\/business\/how-restaurants-are-getting-creative-to-attract-workers\/\" class=\"promo-link__link\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n\t\tHow restaurants are getting creative to attract workers\t<\/a><br \/>\n<\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<p>And with stars like Tom Brady and Lebron James investing in major league pickleball, the best pickleball players are making money at the sport.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s going to keep exploding because I think there was a study that just came out that 34 million people played pickleball last year. That\u2019s more than tennis or golf.
