We began our search for the best small-cap index funds by building a list of Morningstar\u2019s highest-rated U.S.-centric and international funds. Index funds tend to charge low expense ratios, so we only included funds that charge less than 0.40%. This resulted in a preliminary list of 46 small-cap index funds.<\/p>\n
From there, we eliminated actively managed funds that lacked any indexing component. The remaining candidates included a short list of small-cap blend, value and growth funds. We then composed our list by choosing a variety of options with the lowest relative fees and category-beating performance.<\/p>\n
Note that we have deviated from the strict index fund classification by including two factor-based funds. For wealthier investors, we included a tax-efficient small cap index fund.
