{"id":48364,"date":"2023-01-30T01:07:04","date_gmt":"2023-01-30T01:07:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.brandon.ddtest.info\/multisite-test\/with-student-loan-forgiveness-halted-white-house-says-685k-virginia-borrowers-eligible-for-relief\/"},"modified":"2023-01-30T01:07:04","modified_gmt":"2023-01-30T01:07:04","slug":"with-student-loan-forgiveness-halted-white-house-says-685k-virginia-borrowers-eligible-for-relief","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.brandon.ddtest.info\/multisite-test\/with-student-loan-forgiveness-halted-white-house-says-685k-virginia-borrowers-eligible-for-relief\/","title":{"rendered":"With student loan forgiveness halted, White House says 685K Virginia borrowers eligible for relief"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> \n<\/p>\n<div id=\"dataContent\">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the U.S. Supreme Court prepares to consider the legality of President Joe Biden\u2019s student loan forgiveness program, the White House on Friday released data showing 685,000 borrowers in Virginia applied or were automatically eligible for debt relief.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of those, 429,000 applications were approved by the U.S. Department of Education and sent to loan servicers for discharge before legal challenges halted the process.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last August, Biden <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.virginiamercury.com\/2022\/08\/24\/biden-to-wipe-out-10000-in-student-loan-debt-for-many-borrowers\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">announced a sweeping plan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to cancel some student debt and extend the suspension on repayment instituted at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"2WXGlt5nD8\">\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.virginiamercury.com\/blog-va\/how-many-virginians-no-longer-qualify-for-student-loan-relief-its-hard-to-say\/\" rel=\"noopener\">How many Virginians no longer qualify for student loan relief? It\u2019s hard to say.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"\u201cHow many Virginians no longer qualify for student loan relief? It\u2019s hard to say.\u201d \u2014 Virginia Mercury\" src=\"https:\/\/www.virginiamercury.com\/blog-va\/how-many-virginians-no-longer-qualify-for-student-loan-relief-its-hard-to-say\/embed\/#?secret=2WXGlt5nD8\" data-secret=\"2WXGlt5nD8\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Under the <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/manage-loans\/forgiveness-cancellation\/debt-relief-info#income\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, eligible borrowers could have up to $20,000 in student loan debt canceled. The relief would be available to those who earn less than $125,000 per year or married couples or heads of households who earn less than $250,000 per year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pell Grant recipients would be eligible for up to $20,000 in debt relief. Non-Pell recipients would be eligible for up to $10,000.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, in November, legal challenges led the department to stop receiving applications. The case was appealed to the <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.supremecourt.gov\/DocketPDF\/22\/22-506\/251435\/20230104222942852_22-506tsUnitedStates.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Supreme Court<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Oral arguments <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2022\/12\/01\/supreme-court-agrees-to-decide-fate-of-bidens-student-debt-relief-00071679\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are scheduled<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to begin in February.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cStudent loan debt relief is blocked,\u201d the program\u2019s webpage <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/debt-relief-announcement\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">states<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cCourts have issued orders blocking our student debt relief program. As a result, at this time, we are not accepting applications. We are seeking to overturn those orders.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a statement accompanying its release of state data on eligible borrowers, the White House said \u201cmillions of those borrowers could be experiencing the benefits of that relief today \u2013 were it not for lawsuits brought on by elected officials in some of their own states.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This September Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin joined almost two dozen other Republican governors in <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rga.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Joint-Governors-Letter-Opposing-the-Biden-Student-Loan-Forgiveness-Plan-9-12-22.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">calling for Biden<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to scrap the plan.
